Doris Jane Hart attended Barry in 1943-44 and 1944-45. She later graduated from the University of Miami, and received an honorary degree from Barry. She was an outstanding tennis player, who went on to an illustrious professional career. She won the U.S. Women’?s Open singles title in 1954 and 1955. She also won one Australian Open singles title (1949), three French Open singles titles (1950-52) and one Wimbledon singles championship (1952), giving her an impressive seven Grand Slam singles titles.

Hart is one of only three women, and the first, (Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova are the others) to have won singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments. The feat is referred to as a career boxed set.

She won the U.S. Open doubles title four consecutive years (1951-54) and achieved the U.S. Open mixed doubles crown five straight years (1951-55). She totaled 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and 15 Grand Slam mixed doubles crowns. She also won the U.S. Hard Court singles title in 1949, earned the U.S. Clay Court singles title in 1950, and won several other national titles in doubles and mixed doubles. Her play in the Wightman Cup against Great Britain – she was 14-0 in singles and 8-1 in doubles – helped the U.S. dominate the event between 1946 and 1955.
