Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has developed from a basketball organization into the NCAA Division II "Conference of National Champions." Since its inception, the Conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership, and national prominence.
Sunshine State Conference schools have won NCAA national championships (135 total) in baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's and women's tennis, women's volleyball, and men's and women's swimming. SSC teams are nationally recognized annually in all league sports. The first NCAA Division II national championship was won by an SSC-sponsored school in the spring of 1978. The Florida Southern baseball team captured the national crown that year.
The SSC sponsors championships in 21 sports for men and women: baseball, beach volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track, and volleyball.
Barry University joined the SSC in June of 1988. Other SSC members - all in Florida - are Eckerd College (St. Petersburg), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach), Florida Tech (Melbourne), Florida Southern College (Lakeland), Lynn University (Boca Raton), Nova Southeastern University (Davie), Palm Beach Atlantic (West Palm Beach), Rollins College (Winter Park), Saint Leo University (Saint Leo) and the University of Tampa (Tampa).
The SSC is respected for its academic foresight, setting standards which were later adopted by the NCAA. The SSC has led all 24 Division II conferences in the NCAA Academic Success Rate every year it has been measured. Each year, over 1,500 student-athletes are named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll with GPAs over 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
