MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/GoRout released their final NCAA Division II Softball Rankings on Tuesday morning, Barry University checked in at no. 17 after a strong finish in the NCAA South-1 Regional. This is the highest finish to a season since 2012, and the highest ranking since the week one poll in 2014.
The Buccaneers ended the year in the South-1 Regional winner take all championship game. Being seeded fifth in the south region, Barry fell in the first game to fourth-seeded Nova Southeastern and that set up a tough schedule ahead, but one the Buccaneers were more than tasked for. Barry defeated Spring Hill and the rematch of the Sharks to move into the regional championship. On the cusp of elimination, the Buccaneers took down top-ranked Tampa in extra innings to force a winner-take-all game and punch a ticket to Supers. Ultimately, Barry fell 4-0 and Tampa went on to finish as the national runner-up.
This season, Barry reached the regional for the first time since 2013, Head Coach
Sean Cotter reached his 600th career win, and the Bucs won 20 Sunshine State Conference games for the first time since 2003. Freshman sensation,
Sarah Langlie, was named the SSC Freshman of the Year, an All-SSC First-Team member, First-Team All-Region for the NFCA and Second-Team All-Region for the D2CCA.
Caroline Figueroa and Langlie led the league in doubles with 17 each. She is the eighth Buccaneer to win Freshman of the Year, the first since 2015.
Becka Mellor was named the Most Improved Athlete at the 10th Annual Bucky's. Mellor had a record breaking season tying the single season record with eight triples and led the SSC in doing so.
