Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (24-14, 3-7 SSC) dropped the front end of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series to the Rollins College Tars (33-10, 9-1 SSC) 2-1 in nine innings earlier tonight at Lake Island Park.
Capitalizing on an early Tars' fielding error, Heather Hodges scored from second to give the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. From that point, both teams combined for eight hits, while Barry's Liz Bennett and Rollins' Jamie Elam put on an "old-fashioned" pitching dual for the 135 fans.
However, with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Rollins' Kristin Hughes drove in Lindsey Manz with an RBI single to center to tie the game at one apiece sending the game into extra innings. Finally, Kiley Sieffert belted a walk-off home run to give Rollins the 2-1 win.
Bennett (19-10) suffered the loss for Barry giving up two runs on four hits and struck out five. Elam (26-7) picked up the win for the Tars giving up one unearned run on four hits, while striking out 10.
The Buccaneers will conclude the series on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 1 pm.
