Box Score 2 FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (21-12) completed a three-game sweep over the Nova Southeastern Knights (25-14) earlier tonight winning the first game of the doubleheader 7-2 and the nightcap 3-1 at AD Griffin Sports Complex.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Buccaneers got things off to a solid start with a three-run first inning after taking full advantage of four Jennifer Garcia walks. The Bucs added another run in the second and Kim Fujimoto doubled in two runs in the third to give the Bucs a 6-0 lead after three innings.
In the fourth, the Knights tried to take advantage a Buccaneer error and scored twice, but that was all they could manage as Ashley Loose drove in the Bucs' insurance run in the seventh giving the Bucs a 7-2 win.
Elizabeth Bennett (16-8) picked up the win for Barry after giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out five. Garcia (11-4) suffered the loss for Nova allowing six unearned runs on five hits, seven walks, and two strikeouts.
Maile Keeny gave the Bucs an early 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI double to right center, while Fujimoto extended the Bucs' lead to two with an RBI single in the third. Nova's Janette Rodriguez cut the Barry lead to one with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, but Amanda Moore posted her eighth home run of the season in the sixth lifting the Bucs to a 3-1 win over the Knights.
Sarah Backe hurled the first three innings for Barry and gave up one run on five Knight hits and struck out two. Bennett (17-8) picked up the win hurling the final four innings holding the Knights scoreless, while allowing five hits and striking out five.
Loose went four-for-six with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Bucs at the plate, while Fujimoto went two-for-six with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Janette Rodriguez led the Knights going three-for-five in the doubleheader with an RBI and a run scored. Diana Goolsby added two hits for the Knights.
The Buccaneers will resume action taking on Valdosta State on Friday, Mar. 26 at 2 pm.
