Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (18-12, 3-6 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the fourth-ranked Tampa Spartans (15-3, 7-2) earlier today at Buccaneer Field. The Buccaneers won the opening game 2-1, while the Spartans took the nightcap 4-2.

In the first game, Becky Testin reached on an error and later scored on a Katie Bender RBI double to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead in the first. The Bucs responded in similar fashion in the bottom half of the inning when Ashley Loose reached on an error and later scored on a Sarah Backe RBI single that tied the game at one apiece.

Tampa's Devlin Dougherty and Barry's Elizabeth Bennett squared off for a pitching dual for the next six innings, but a Spartan pitching mistake lifted the Bucs. With one out and bases loaded in the seventh, Doughtery hurled a fastball in the dirt that allowed Kathleen McNamara to score from third for the 2-1 victory. Bennett (14-7) picked up the win for Barry giving up one unearned run and striking out nine, while Dougherty (7-2) gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out five in the loss for Tampa.

In the nightcap, Miki Stark hit a bloop single to left center that gave the Spartans an early 2-0 lead. Kelly Glover and Bender each posted RBI's in the fourth and fifth innings respectively to extend the Spartan lead to four. Mailie Keeney launched her sixth home run of the season to narrow the gap 4-2, but the Spartans fended off the late Barry surge for the win.

Bennett (14-8) gave up four runs, five walks and struck out three in the loss for Barry, while Testin (4-1) gave up two run and struck out 10 to earn the win for Tampa.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Mar. 19 at Nova Southeastern at 7 pm.
