Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The 12th-ranked Barry University softball team opened up the Las Vegas Classic Tournament with a pair of wins. The Buccaneers toppled second-ranked St. Mary's, Texas (0-1) 4-2 in the opener and capped off the day with a 9-8 win over Hawai'i Hilo (0-2).
In the tournament opener, the Buccaneers (4-0) scored two runs in the fourth inning after three costly St. Mary errors and added one in the fourth for the 4-2 win. Elizabeth Bennett hurled seven innings and struck out seven to earn her third win of the season. St. Mary's All-American pitcher, Kym Kling (0-1), suffered the loss giving up four runs (two earned) while striking out four.
The Buccaneers faced Hawai'i-Hilo in the night-cap and came away with a 9-8 come-from-behind victory. Down 8-1, the Bucs scored three in the sixth and five in the seventh to slip past the Vulcans. Bennett (4-0) picked up the win for the Buccaneers hurling the final 4.2 innings and striking out five.
Kim Fujimoto, Heather Hodges and Delilah Stroup each had three hits to lead the Bucs at the plate while Fujimoto added two RBI.
Maile Keeney led the Bucs with three RBI and Krista Latessa scored twice and added a homerun.
The Buccaneers will resume play Friday, Feb. 6 facing Montana State-Billings at 10 am and Biola at 4 pm.
