Softball Powers Past Braves

Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers closed out the Super 8 Slugfest in Valdosta, Ga., with a 5-2 win over the West Georgia Lady Braves in softball action on Sunday.

Kim Fujimoto got Barry (13-8) off on the right track with a two-run homer in the first inning. The Bucs tacked on another run in the second on an RBI-single by Delilah Stroup and two more in the third on an error and a base hit by Krista Latessa.

Sarah Backe started for Barry and allowed single runs to the Braves (5-11) in each of the first two innings. Elizabeth Bennett (11-5) relieved her with one out in the second and closed out the game without allowing another run. She gave up four hits and three walks and struck out six.

Dani Izatt (4-4) took the loss for West Georgia, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks with seven strike outs. Jolene Holthaus pitched the final two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and walking two.

The Bucs were one of two undefeated teams at the Slugfest, going 5-0 over the weekend.

Barry and West Georgia will get back together on Tuesday, Mar. 2 at 1:00 pm in Carrollton, Ga., for a doubleheader.
