Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Barry University softball dropped the opening game of a three-game series to the Florida Southern Moccasins 5-0 in Sunshine State Conference play earlier tonight at Barnett Field.
The Buccaneers (7-7, 1-3 SSC) squandered an early scoring opportunity in the first inning with Heather Hodges and Kim Fujimoto on first and second with one out. The defensive stand gave the Moccasins (4-0, 4-0 SSC) confidence heading into the bottom half of the inning. Krista Bradley and Jesse Shepherd both scored runs in the first to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead heading into the second.
Florida Southern's pitcher, Megan Brown gave up Buccaneer hits in the second, but Barry came up empty, again. The Moccasins chipped away at Barry pitcher Elizabeth Bennett adding two more runs in the second on Shepherd's RBI single and Stephanie Huber's RBI fielder's choice extending their lead to four.
Both defenses anchored down the next three innings allowing no runs and only one hit. However, Florida Southern's Sarah Kohlbrenner led off the sixth with a single to right field and Stacy Gross drove in the run with a sacrifice fly giving the Moccasins the 5-0 win.
Krista Bradley finished 2 for 4 at the plate and scored twice to lead the Moccasins. Barry's sluggers mustered only three hits.
Bennett (7-4) suffered the loss for Barry giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out three. Brown (3-0) earned the win for Florida Southern allowing no runs, three hits and struck out seven.
Both teams will resume play on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 pm for a conference doubleheader.
