Softball Flattens Tritons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- After a one-day postponement due to rain, the Barry University softball team picked up a pair of Sunshine State Conference victories over the Eckerd Tritons winning the first game 7-0 and the nightcap 8-0 in six innings.

In the first game, Kim Fujimoto drove in the Bucs winning run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly scoring KD Smith from third who led off the game with a triple. The Bucs added three more runs in the third and fifth innings and pounded out nine hits en route to the 7-0 win.

Smith went two-for-four with a run scored and two RBI to lead the Bucs, while Krista Latessa and Carrie Roberts added two hits apiece. Latessa also added an RBI and scored twice.

Geralyn Elam (19-3) fanned 12 and allowed only one hit to earn the win for the Buccaneers. Kristina Lemon (2-21) gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, walked six, and struck out three to suffer the loss.

In the nightcap, the Bucs took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning then added three more in the third to lead by six. In the fourth inning, Fujimoto extended the Bucs' lead 7-0 with a solo homer to right center, her fifth of the season. In the sixth inning, Kristina Socarras hit an RBI single to score Heather Hodges from third giving the Bucs the 8-0 mercy rule win in six innings.

Socarras went two-for-four with two RBI and scored once to lead the Bucs at the plate, while Fujimoto was also two-for-four with an RBI and scored twice.

Erin Cormier (12-1) picked up the shutout win giving up five hits, walked one and struck out eight, while Lemon (2-22) gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits and walked two to suffer the loss.

The Buccaneers improved to 31-6 overall and 9-1 in the SSC, while the Tritons fell to 2-35 and 0-10, SSC. The Buccaneers will return to their home field on Tuesday, Mar. 25 hosting region nemesis Alabama-Huntsville at 2 pm.
