Softball Tops Moccasins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team opened up Sunshine State Conference play with a pair of wins over the Florida Southern Moccasins winning the first game 1-0 in nine innings and the nightcap 7-1 earlier today.

The Buccaneers came out on top of the nine-inning pitcher's dual 1-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sarah White drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Kim Fujimoto went three-for-four to lead the Bucs.

Geralyn Elam (15-2) gave up three hits, struck out seven, and walked one to earn the win. Stacey Bronson got the starting nod for the Moccasins and gave up seven hits and struck out 11, but reliever Teri Morgan (5-5) took the loss.

In game two, the Buccaneer bats came alive as the Bucs rapped out nine hits en route to the 7-1 win. The Moccasins scored early on an Erin Cormier wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Bucs scored three in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Bucs extended their lead by two in the third, but Krista Latessa delivered the fatal blow with a two-run homer in the fifth to extend the Buc lead to six.

Latessa went two-for-three with a double, a home run, and three RBI, while Heather Hodges went two-for-four.

Erin Cormier (9-1) gave up one run on one hit and struck out four to earn the win for the Bucs. Keriann Brooks (0-1) took the loss for the Moccasins and gave up three runs on one hit, walked two, and struck out one.

The Buccaneers improved to 24-5 overall and 2-0 in the SSC, while the Moccasins fell to 13-9, 0-2 in the SSC. The Buccaneers will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 16 hosting Saint Leo at 1 pm.
