Softball Breaks Down Tars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers broke down the #22-ranked Rollins Tars in a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader taking game one 3-0 and winning the nightcap 2-1.

The Bucs got all the runs they needed in the first game in the first inning. KD Smith led off with a triple and scored on a one-out single by Hillary Hamilton. Hamilton later scored on an error by Tar centerfielder Ashli Gagliano and Lindsey Rhodes came home on a ground out by Jenny Miranda.

Geralyn Elam (21-3) made the runs stand up, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for her sixth one-hitter of the season. She walked three and struck out 13. Sarah Reeber (16-7) took the loss for the Tars, despite setting down the last 17 batters she faced. She allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits, striking out two without walking a batter.

In game two, Erin Cormier (8-4) earned her second straight win when Rhodes scored from third on an error by shortstop Randi Weiss in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rhodes had led off the inning with a double.

Cormier went the distance, allowing one earned run on seven hits and four walks, while striking out a season high 10 batters. Kelly Powe (15-1) suffered her first loss of the season after giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. She struck out four.

The Bucs (32-12, 15-7 SSC) stayed one game behind Saint Leo in the SSC race. They visit the Lions next Saturday. Rollins falls to 31-11, 10-8 in the league. Barry hosts Florida Tech tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
