ABOUT:

Barry University hosts the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's South Region 1 Tennis Tournament. Matches will be held on campus at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Friday, May 6 and Saturday May 7.


RECORDS:
NCAA Division II Championship Records: Women
NCAA POSTSEASON:
The winner of this tournament will advance to the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship, May 17-21, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

2021 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP:  The run continues. No. 2 seed Barry defeated No. 1 seed UIndy, 4-0, to win its fourth-straight national championship in DII women's tennis.

With the victory, the Buccaneers became just the second program in DII women's tennis to win four titles in a row. SIU Edwardsville did it from 1986-89. It's also Barry's sixth championship in the sport.


THE FIELD IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:

Barry (82-21 in the NCAA Tournament) has won six national titles since 2011. The Bucs also have two second-place and five third-place finishes, in addition to a fourth.

West Alabama (0-1) is making just its second appearance in the tournament, looking for their first win.

Lynn (80-22) has won three national championships, the last in 2001, and seven runner-up finishes, four third-place and two fourth-place.

NCAA POSTSEASON:
The winner of this tournament will advance to the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship, May 18-22, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

2021 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: Alejandro Palacios sealed the DII men's tennis championship for the Barry Buccaneers after beating Columbus State's Christian Garay in No. 2 singles. Palacios knocked off Garay 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Barry jumped out to a 3-1 lead after winning the doubles point and closing out two singles matches in just two sets. It was the second championship in a row for the Bucs, after they won in 2019, over these same Cougars, and the 2020 tournament was canceled.  


THE FIELD IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:

The South Region 1 Tournament may be the most accomplished group in all of the field. Barry, West Florida and Valdosta State have combined for a 207-64 record in 73 trips to the tournament. The trio has won 11 national championships, finished second 12 times and third nine times.

Barry (86-23 in the NCAA Tournament) has won five national titles since 2010, and has seven second-place finishes. The 12 finishes of second or better are the most in DII history.

West Florida (70-19) has four national championships in 23 trips to the tournament and have added two second-place and six third-place finishes.

Valdosta State (51-22) has two national titles (2006, 2011). The Blazers also have three runner-up finishes and two fourth places.

Benedict (0-4) is looking for its first NCAA post-season win.
