Men's Basketball Alumnus Lazo Joins Tennessee Women's Basketball Coaching Staff

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Continuing his upward trajectory in the coaching landscape, Barry University's men's basketball alumnus Gabe Lazo was recently hired by first-year Tennessee Women's Basketball Head Coach Kim Caldwell as an assistant coach.

Lazo joins the Lady Vols from Mississippi State, where the Bulldogs recorded a 45-23 record with a pair of postseason berths (NCAA Tournament in 2023, WBIT in 2024). He brought in the 16th-ranked class in 2022-23, resulting in a NCAA berth and a promotion to Associate Head Coach. Along with recruiting, Lazo also served as MSU's Designated Defensive Coordinator. Lazo also worked at Florida International (2017-19), Stony Brook (2019-21) and George Washington (2021-22).

A 2008 graduate from Barry, Lazo was a part of Barry's 2006-07 team that advanced to the NCAA Division II South Regional and finished with a 23-7 overall record. He played professionally in Puerto Rico before beginning his coaching career as the Head Coach for the Miami Suns EYBL Basketball program and at Ferguson High School where he was named Miami-Dade County Coach of the Year three times.
