MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (April 18, 2023) -- Head coach Butch Estes and the men's basketball team have received a commitment from Doral Academy senior Gabe Hernandez to join the Buccaneer squad in fall of 2023.
"We knew the first time we saw Gabe he was a special talent and quickly knew he needed to be a high priority," says Estes. "He was well coached by two local legends. First was George Fernandez, who is now at MDC, and the last two years by Michael Hunt, George's successor. I had the good fortune of coaching with these two gentlemen at the University of Miami and therefore know how well-prepared Gabe will be. He is an explosive guard who can score with outstanding athletic ability. We were also impressed with his leadership skills. He should provide great leadership to our team."
Hernandez had an outstanding senior season and led his team to the District 15-7A Championship and the Regional Semifinals of the 2023 FHSAA State Tournament. He also led the Firebirds to the Kelleher Law Hoopfest Chanmpionship and was named MVP. A four-year varsity starter who scored 1571 points during his high school career, Hernandez averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game as a senior.
"I chose BarryU because it felt like home," says the Miami native. "The atmosphere and the people that I've been around made me know that Barry was a great place."
Hernandez joins the Buccaneer class of 2027 along with Michael Bradley Jr., Sami Elkamel, and Gavin Welch.
