BOCA RATON, Fla.--Barry Deniz Khazan won the women's open singles at the Battle of Boca over top-seeded Ana Sofia Sanchez (10.81 UTR) from Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 at the Rick Macci Tennis Center on Tuesday.
The second-seeded Khazan, who has a Universal Tennis Rating of 10.00, moved the field with ease. After a first round bye, she defeated Junyee See (8.15 UTR) 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 32. In the round of 16, she took down Athena Rosas (8.40) 6-1, 6-0.
The quarterfinals matched her up with Cathrine Goldman (8.88) and end 6-1, 7-6 (5) in favor of the Buccaneer. She took down Jasmin Makela (9.23), from the University of North Florida 6-2, 6-1 in the smifinals.
Other Buccaneers in the field included fourth-seeded Daniela Farfan (9.45), Nathalia Gasparin (8.49), Dinara Alloyarova (8.22) and Makayla Whalen (8.03).
Farfan also had a first-round bye and defeated Madeleine Mcaneille (7.84) 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 and Gasparin 6-4, 6-0 before falling to Makela 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the quarterfinals. Gasparin defeated Olivia Chalik (8.43) 6-4, 6-4 in the first round and Katherine Earnest (6.43) 6-0, 6-2 in the second, before falling to Farfan.
Alloyarova and Whalen both fell in the first round. Alloyrova lost 0-6, 6-4, 10-5 to Junseo Lee (7.45), while Whalen lost 6-2, 6-0 to Sarah Hankshaw (8.54).
