MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers host a trio of teams on opening weekend, facing the Tusculum Pioneers on Friday, the Ichabods of Washburn on Saturday and the Catawba Indians on Sunday.
The Bucs went 14-11 in last year's abbreviated season. The Pioneers were 30-11, Washburn went 20-22 and Catawba was 33-11.
Barry posted solid pitching numbers last year. The Bucs were second in the Sunshine Conference in pitching with a 4.58 ERA with 198 strikeouts in 202.1 innings. The three main rotation pitchers combined to go 10-5 with a 3:71 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 136 innings. Offensively, Ihosvany Castaneda was a Second-Team All-SSC pick after hitting .321 with team-highs with 21 runs and 13 stolen bases. Omar Baldo batted .440 in a part-time role.
The Pioneers graduated the bulk of their offense, which averaged 9.6 runs per game, but return top pitcher Gunnar Becker who went 7-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 52.1 innings.
Washburn has most of the offense back, including top hitters Kros Bay, Zion Bowlin and Parker Dunn. Although they lost their top pitcher, they return their relief ace Zach Philbin. The Washbirn game has moved from 4:00 pm to a noon start.
Catawba's Joe Butts is back after helping lead an offense that scored 8.7 runs per game, while Greg Brown returns to lead the pitching staff.
