The Bucs, ranked second in the ITA national poll, have not lost this season and their last eight wins have come over ranked opponents, including seven against the top 10. They defeated seventh-ranked and third-seeded West Florida 4-0 in the finals of the South Regional. They are led by junior Deniz Khazan, currently the #2-ranked singles player in the division. Jil Engelmann, ranked 20th, and Madeline Bosnjak, ranked 26th, show the depth of the lineup. Barry won the most recent national championship in 2019, defeating Lynn 4-2 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The 2020 championship was canceled due to the pandemic.
The Ravens, tied for 48th in the ITA poll, are also undefeated on the season, and advanced out of the East Region at the second seed. Their 4-3 win over #42 Queens in the regional final is their only match against a ranked foe this season. The Ravens do not have any ranked players, but Liria Loria and Zoe Asterio Correa are both 9-0 in singles.
Barry, overall, has a 94.9 singles winning percentage this spring, while FPU is 84.4. In doubles, the Bucs have lost only once for a 96.7 percentage, while the Ravens are 94.4.
This is the first ever meeting between the teams.
The Ravens-Buccaneers winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Central Oklahoma vs. No. 6 Indiani (Pa.) on Thursday, May 20 at noon (Eastern).
