Women's Tennis Shines at ITA Regional

The Buccaneers swept through the first two rounds in the singles bracket while going undefeated in doubles

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University's women's tennis team displayed a solid showing on the first two days of the ITA South Regional hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla, landing one player in the top four of the singles bracket, and going undefeated in doubles play.

THE MATCHUPS

The ITA regional feature several NCAA DII schools including SSC opponents Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Saint Leo, Embry Riddle, Lynn, Florida Southern, Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic.

SUMMARY:

  • The Buccaneers played valiantly in the singles bracket and we're able to place one player in the top four after Elenore Barrere and Carolin Schmidt faced off in the quarterfinals
    • Verena Schmid won her first two matches decisively by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-0 over players from PBA and Embry-Riddle respectively, before falling to Nova Southeastern's Natalie Espinal in two close sets 6-4, 6-4.
    • Julie Razafindranaly advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating PBA's Vanessa Buchbinder 7-5, 6-3, FIT's Alahna Reto 6-1, 6-3, and Saint Leo's Marta Vicens Miquel 7-6, 6-2 before losing in the quarterfinals to West Florida's Berta Bonardi 7-6, 6-4.
    • Eleonore Barrere made the quarters after knocking off players from Valdosta State, Lynn and Saint Leo, with the last two coming in super tie-breakers.
    • Carolin Schmidt advanced in straight sets over two opponents from Rollins sandwiched around a player from FSC.
    • Barrere faced off against Schmidt in the quarterfinals, with Schmidt defeating her teammate to advance to the semirfinals 6-1, 6-3.
    • Zuza Maciejewska adveanced to the third round, but fell to West Florida's Karolina Silwanowicz 6-4, 6-4.
  • Barry dominated the doubles bracket by upholding the expectations that earned them the first and second seeds of the bracket and a first-round bye by going undefeated throughout Friday and Saturday.
    • Schmid and Maciejewska won their doubles match against PBA's Vanessa Buchbinder and Yulia Russu by an 8-2 margin.
    • Barrere and Razafindranaly succeeded in their doubles match, toppling Florida Southern's Magda Stepnik and Lorena Rionda in an 8-5 match.

ON THE HORIZON:

ITA Regional play continues tomorrow with the conclusion of the singles bracket and the continuation of the doubles bracket.
