Buccaneers meet Florida Tech at 10 a.m. in quarterfinals

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team is headed back to Bradenton in a sequel swan song opportunity.

To rewrite history, the No. 1-ranked Buccaneers must begin with the first obstacle in their path. Enter Florida Tech.

Barry (20-0) meets FIT (14-6) in Thursday's 10 a.m. Sunshine State Conference quarterfinals at IMG Academy. The Bucs won last year's SSC postseason tournament, and are vying to capture their 11th league tournament title. The winner of Thursday's match will meet the winner of Saint Leo and Rollins in Friday's semifinals. The championship match is set for 9 a.m. Saturday.

"We are excited to compete in another SSC Tournament," Barry 10th-year coach Avi Kigel said. "One of our main goals every year is to win this tournament, and we are happy that we will have a chance to do it this year as well."

The Buccaneers opened last year's SSC Tournament with a win over Florida Tech, and beat Lynn, 5-4, in the championship match. The Bucs have won seven of the last eight league postseason titles.

Barry is coming off its 50th consecutive win in the regular season finale. That win streak dates back to the start of last season. Now-defunct BYU Hawai'i owns the national record with 130 straight wins from 2002-05.

The Buccaneers are 56-3 in doubles this season and 92-13 in singles. Sonja Larsen and Julie Razafindranaly each lead the team with 17 singles victories. Carolin Schmidt has 15, and Verena Schmid 14. As pairs teams, Hannah Seizer and Razafindranaly and Larsen and Schmid are both 18-1. Zuza Maciejewska and Schmidt are 16-0 together.
