ATLANTA -- Barry and Eckerd.
For the fourth time.
Barry University men's basketball team will meet Eckerd College in the NCAA Division II South Region championship game 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Morehouse College's Forbes Arena.
The Buccaneers (22-8) swept the regular season series before the Tritons (26-6) won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament title eight days ago. Now the two teams meet in the Sweet 16. It is the second straight year the two schools have met in the NCAA Tournament.
"We know them, and they know us like the back of our hands," Barry coach
Butch Estes said.
What they don't know is what type of game it will be. The two regular season games were nailbiter affairs, decided by four points or less. The league championship game was a blowout win by the Tritons.
Eckerd's Drushaun McLaurn, a Second Team All-South Region selection by the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association, hurt the Bucs for 23 points and 15 rebounds in the league championship game. He had a career-high 37 points and 15 rebounds in the regional semifinal win over Florida Southern Sunday night. Trevon Young had 19 points and nine rebounds in the SSC championship game. He had 19 points on 9 for 9 shooting Sunday. Marco Behori had 18 points, seven boards and five assists against the Bucs eight days ago. He had nine points in the win over the Moccasins.
Barry's
Elvar Fridriksson had 17 points and five assists against the Tritons in the SSC title game. He had eight points and nine assists in the Bucs regional semifinal win over Claflin.
Sunday Dech scored 16 points and grabbed six boards against the Tritons last weekend, and had nine points and five boards Sunday.
Kooper Glick scored 14 points in the SSC championship, and finished with six points and four steals in the win over the Panthers.
Barry is making its second trip to the Sweet 16, both coming in the last three years. Eckerd is headed back to the region title game for the first time since 2007.
