MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Men's basketball secured a big addition to the 2026-27 recruiting class with 6-7 Dutch product Tjall de Vaal, head coach Justin Furr announced Thursday.
"We found out that Tjall might want to consider the college route kind of late in the recruiting process," Furr said. "After doing our homework, it was pretty easy to see that Tjall would be a great addition to our program. He is a team-first guy who we believe can be a stat sheet stuffer. He shoots the ball at an extremely high level and has extensive experience as a player for Rotterdam in the BNXT League. His FIBA and professional experience give our team a lot of advantages, as he will bring the mindset of a professional to our team. We are very excited to bring Tjall to The Shores!"
A 6-7 forward from the Netherlands, de Vaal spent time playing for the hometown Rotterdam City in the BXNT and the Netherland national team. De Vaal averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 33 games this past season with Rotterdam City where he was named the Rising Star of the Year for the BNXT League. He shot 39.1 percent from three-point range, 46.9 percent from the floor overall. He scored in double figures 11 times, including a season-high 20 on Jan. 17 against Charleroi.
De Vaal averaged 11.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists during the 2023 FIBA U18 European Division B Championship. De Vaal helped the Netherlands finish fourth during the 2024 FIBA U20 Division B EuroBasket while averaging 10.7 points, 2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
"I chose Barry because of the opportunity presented to me by Coach Furr and the University," De Vaal said. "I want to continue to develop as a player and believe the best path for me to achieve my goals is at Barry. Having Ryan (Van Eyck) there also gave me a level of comfortability to make the move to Miami. I love the way that we will play and how Coach Furr plans to use me in the system. I'm excited to see what the future holds for me and our team."
The Buccaneers are coming off a 17-13 record and a Sunshine State Conference Semifinals appearance.
