Hoops Looks To Rebound In Tampa

Buccaneers face Spartans on Saturday, Dec. 1

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers look to rebound from opening game losses when they visit the Tampa Spartans on Saturday, Dec. 1. The women tip at 2:00 pm, followed by the men at 4:00 pm in the Martinez Center.

Barry enters 2-4, 0-1 in the SSC after dropping the opener to Nova Southeastern 62-51 on Wednesday. Nichel Tampa scored a game-high 21 points. Ida Andersson added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Harriet Swindells chipped in 10 points as well.

Nichel Tampa is second in the league at 16.5 points per game and Andersson follows at 14.3 points, good for fourth.  Andersson leads the team in rebounding at 8.5 per game, which also ranks fourth in the conference. Tampa also tops the team at 3.3 assists per game.

The Spartans (5-1, 0-1 SSC) are also coming off an opening game loss, 55-48, to pre-season favorite Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. Staja Tyghter had 14 points and nine rebounds to pace the Spartans in the game.

Tyghter, a senior guard from Orlando, leads the team with 13.8 points per game. Emily Eshoo, another senior, ranks second in scoring at 11.3 points per game, converting at 48.9 percent from the field. Sophomore forward Dori Nagy is averaging a double-double through six games at 10.3 rebounds, which leads the league, while posting 10.5 points per game. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Tampa leads the all-time series 47-24, although Barry snapped a 10-game losing steak by taking all three contests last year.
  • The Bucs won 66-56 in Tampa in December, then came away with a 59-58 win at home on Barbara Cousino's buzzer-beater on Homecoming. The Homecoming win gave the Bucs the right to host the SSC Quarterfinal game and they won 71-68.

Men's Basketball - Saturday, Dec. 1; 4:00 pm, Martinez Center

The 12th-ranked Bucs dropped their first game of the season 103-93 to the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday. Six Bucs, including all five starters, scored in double figures. David Moya, Daniel Mortensen and Isaiah Hobbs each had 16 points to lead the Bucs. Mortensen added a team-high nine rebounds.

The Bucs are second in the conference averaging 84.2 points per game, thanks to a balanced scoring attack that sees six players averaging at least 8.2 points per game and eight players have reached double figures in at least one game. Evan Walshe leads the team with 12.0 points per game, but Mortensen (11.2) and Hobbs (10.0) are right behind him. Tylan Birts collects 6.4 errant shots per game to lead the team in rebounding. Moya, a 5.0 per game, leads the team and is third in the conference in assists.

The Spartans are also coming off a loss in their SSC opener, falling 74-67 at Florida Southern. Alberto Moreno led the team with 17 points, while Vincent Biffle add 16 and Devon Colley had 10.

The Spartans average just 67.3 points per game, but have five players averaging double figures. Senior forward Anthony Gamble paces the team at 13.7 points per game, while junior guard Biffle adds 13.3. Fellow guards Moreno, Colley and Pat Bacon average 11.1, 10.0 and 10.0 respectively. Junior forward Cedric Belemene is third in the league at 9.6 rebounds per game. Moreno also leads the team at 2.9 assists per game.
