VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Barry senior
Sonja Larsen won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region singles title Monday, becoming the third ITA singles champion in program history.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"I'm proud of Sonja (Larsen) for capturing the singles title at the ITA South Regional," assistant coach Steve Schram said. "She competed very well, and is well deserving of this title. We now look forward to the national singles tournament, where she will compete against the other regional winners and represent Barry University and the South Region."
SUMMARY:
- Larsen defeated No. 5-seeded Paula Coyos of West Florida, 6-0, 6-2, to become the ITA singles title champion.
- She went 5-0 in the singles bracket.
- Larsen was the sixth-seed in singles.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Larsen is the first ITA singles champion since 2007, when Ildi Csordas claimed the title.
- Larsen has won her last 33 singles matches, dating back to last spring.
- With the victory, Larsen will advance to the Oracle Cup taking place from Oct.12-15, in Rome, Ga.
