VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Barry's women's tennis team wrapped up day three of the ITA Fall Regional Sunday, qualifying one for the finals on Monday.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"Overall, I was glad to see the girls compete hard over the past few days," assistant coach Steve Schram said. "I'm looking forward to watching Sonja (Larsen) compete tomorrow for the ITA South Regional Singles Championship. The senior has worked extremely hard over the past four years and definitely deserves to be playing in the finals as she represents Barry."
SUMMARY:
- Senior Sonja Larsen qualified for the finals taking place on Monday in singles.
- Larsen defeated Lynn's Jan Abaza, 6-4, in set one of the quarterfinals. Abaza retired due to injury in the second set, so then Larsen took the victory.
- In the semifinal round, Larsen won automatically, again by default against a Lynn athlete.
- Mara Cerrini and Judith Bohnenkamp came together in the backdraw to take down a team from Delta State in the consolation semifinals, 8-0.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Cerrini and Bohnenkamp were named the winners of the backdraw doubles by default in the final round.
- Cerrini won her first singles match of the backdraw, but fell short in the second.
- Larsen already bested her most previous ITA Fall Regional run, as she made it to the quarterfinal round in 2016.
ON THE HORIZON:
Larsen will represent Barry in the final round of singles on Monday. Match time is to be determined.
