Women's Tennis Opens SSC Tournament Thursday vs. Florida Tech

Bucs earn top seed following regular season championship

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's women's tennis team will open the Sunshine State Conference Tournament in a quarterfinal match versus Florida Tech 3:30 p.m. Thursday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Eckerd will serve as this year's host of the eight-team league postseason tournament. The winner of the Barry-Florida Tech quarterfinal will play the winner of the Nova Southeastern-Rollins quarterfinal in Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinals. The finals are set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday.13951

"We're looking forward to play in the SSC Tournament," Bucs nine-year coach Avi Kigel said. "It's one of our team goals to win it. As always, it's not going to be easy, so we're looking for three good days of tennis."

The top-seeded Buccaneers (22-0) beat eighth-seeded Panthers (13-10) in Melbourne in February during the regular season. Barry went on to win the league regular season with a 9-0 record. Lynn finished second at 8-1, and Florida Southern was third at 6-3.

The Bucs have won nine SSC Tournament titles, most recently in 2015. Lynn won last year's tournament after Saint Leo captured the regular season championship. Barry's nine titles ranks second to Florida Southern and Lynn's 10 apiece.

The winner of the postseason tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which is set for May 1-2 at regional sites around the country.

"The IMG Academy has been one of the most famous tennis academies in the world," Kigel said. "It will be great to showcase our tennis level there."
