Buccaneers meet Tampa, Florida Southern in weekend roadies

Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Barry women's tennis team did not drop a set Tuesday in its sweep at Palm Beach Atlantic's Gornto Tennis Center. 

The sixth-ranked Buccaneers lost only one game in the three doubles matches, and 22nd-ranked Sonja Larsen and Verena Schmid each won their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 shutouts to clinch the victory. Schmid rolled over Taylor Conti at No. 2 in the first singles match to finish, and Larsen defeated Michaela Mignemi at the No. 4 position.

SUMMARY:

  • Only Ana Pain and Larsen surrendered a game in doubles, beating Leoni Polzin and Taylor Conti, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. Zuza Maciejewska and Schmid blanked Romina Bolagay and Mignemi, 8-Love, at No. 2, and Isabel Rapisarda Calvo and Karina Goia were 8-0 winners over Michala Burns and Dezi Bowman at No. 3.
  • Maciejewska, the second-ranked player in the South Region, beat Polzin, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. That gave Barry a 6-0 lead.
  • Goia coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maja Jovic at No. 5 singles.
  • Rapisarda Calvo, who is ranked No. 11 in the South Region, put the Bucs ahead, 8-0, when she finished off Bolagay, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
  • Mara Cerini finished the sweep with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Florencia Roncatti at No. 6 singles.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry has 11 sweeps this season, including eight by the 9-0 variety.
  • Cerrini, Goia and Larsen all remained unbeaten in snigles.
  • Maciejewska improved to 15-0 in doubles.
