ROME, Ga. -- Women's tennis senior
Sonja Larsen was crowned the singles champion after beating the No. 1 seed competitor in the final round of the Oracle Cup Saturday at Berry College.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"It was a great experience to play here," Larsen said. "Im excited to go to California. It is amazing to be the first female athlete from Barry to win this title. I made history!"
"It was great to see Sonja come back and win this event," assistant coach Steve Schram said. "Now we're getting excited for the next big tournament."
SUMMARY:
- Larsen defeated Hanna Volikova, from Indianapolis, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to win the Division II singles title.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Dating back to last spring, Larsen is now undefeated in her last 36 singles matches.
- Larsen is Barry's first ITA Fall National singles Champion.
- Barry has won three doubles titles at this event, including in 2013 and 2014
- Her opponent was the No. 1 seed. Larsen was the No. 2 seed.
- She will compete against Division I players at the next tournament
ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs host the BarryU Invite from Nov. 3-5. Larsen qualified for the national tournament from Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, Ca.
