MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's sixth-ranked women's tennis team opened the exhibition season with a 7-2 win over ASA Tuesday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers, who are coming off an 18-4 season a year ago, erased a loss to the Silver Storm, which make their home out of North Miami Beach, last year.
Barry's No. 2 doubles team of
Sonja Larsen and
Ana Pain defeated Dugleisy Linarez and Jeung Yang, 8-5.
Zuza Maciejewska and
Dasha Salnikova were 8-4 winners over Sarah Wardenburg and Ghita Nassik at No. 3 pairs. Bucs newcomers
Verena Schmid and
Isabel Rapisarda Calvo lost 9-8 (7-0) to Yuliana Monroy and Emily Chang at the top position.
In the first singles match to finish, Barry's
Karina Goia defeated Lisa Khamassi, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Barry's
Judith Bohnenkamp beat Siri Victorsson, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Schmid cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Yang at the No. 3 spot. Monroy defeated Larsen, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. Salnikova rebounded after dropping the first set to have her way with Chang, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 position.
In the longest match of the day, Rapisarda Calvo outlasted Linarez, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 11-9, at No. 5 singles. Rapisarda Calvo trailed 8-6 in the super tiebreaker, but rallied to win.
Barry will host State College of Florida 11 a.m. Saturday to conclude the exhibition season. The Bucs open the regular season in a home match against Bethune-Cookman Feb. 4.
