Women's Tennis Prepares for Big Weekend

No. 2 Buccaneers meet No. 3 Saint Leo Saturday in three-match road swing

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Avi Kigel has pointed to this weekend since the beginning of the season. Now the Buccaneers women's tennis coach wants to see how his team responds.

No. 2 Barry (11-0, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) meets No. 3 Saint Leo (14-1, 4-0) on the road 10 a.m. Saturday as part of a three-match road trip north. Saturday's match will be streamed on Saint Leo's Network. The match will also be available via Live Stats.

"For sure, the big one for us is definitely Saint Leo," said Kigel, who is in his eighth year as head coach of the Bucs. "They're a very good team. It's going to be a tough one, but I think we're ready and looking forward to that match."

The Buccaneers will also play Eckerd (2-13, 0-5) in St. Petersburg, Florida, at 3 p.m. Friday and No. 31 Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Barry has had matches against No. 4 Armstrong and No. 7 Nova Southeastern postponed until the end of the season due to rain on the originally-scheduled dates, so this weekend signals the first major test for the Bucs against South Region powers. Barry beat No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific, 5-2, in a neutral site match in San Diego during Spring Break.

"I think we're ready," Kigel said. "We've had 11 matches up to now and won all of them. We had one very tough match against Hawai'i Pacific, which we came through and won that won. We know that the rest of the season it's going to be even tougher with a couple of very tough conference matches, plus Armstrong. So we're definitely looking forward to that. We know it's going to show us where we are, and our chances going forward to conference, regionals and nationals, but I think we're ready. We're playing better and better and better, so I can't wait."

The Lions have three nationally-ranked singles players in Natalia Siedliska, Isabella Robbiani and Marine Beugre-Guyot. Siedliska and Anastasia Wagner are also ranked as a doubles team. Wagner is ranked regionally in singles. Barry also has three ranked singles players in Zuza Maciejewska, Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain, while Emma Onila is ranked in the South Region. Larsen and Pain form the No. 13 duo in the country, while Onila and Maciejewska are ranked No. 22 in doubles.
