MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team embarks on their spring break trip this week, traveling to Mobile, Ala., to face the Spring Hill College Badgers and Lakeland, Fla., for a Sunshine State Conference series with the Florida Southern College Moccasins.
The Bucs (9-7, 4-2 SSC) face Spring Hill (12-10) on Wednesday, Mar. 9 in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm Eastern time. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The Badgers are led freshman Katelyn Wilson. She leads the Badgers with a .422 average, scoring 10 runs and driving in 10. Sophomore shortstop Carmen Byrd and freshman catcher Kali Clement have been the catalysts at the top of the order. Byrd is batting .351 with 18 runs scored and a team-high two triples. Clement leads the team with 20 runs and 13 walks, hitting .310. The Badgers are averaging 5.2 runs per game.
In the circle, senior Caroline Sagrera is 7-7 with a 1.50 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 79.1 innings. Freshman Danielle Clark is 4-3 with a 2.24 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 56.1 innings. The Badgers have a 1.72 ERA and give up 2.86 runs per game overall.
The Bucs are averaging 5.9 runs per game, led by junior designated player Cheyanne Head. Head, who already has been named national player of the week by the NFCA, is batting .475 with seven doubles and 11 RBI and has stolen six bases. Senior catcher Dee Espinosa is batting .409 with eight doubles, two homers and a team-best 22 RBI, despite walking a team-leading 13 times. Senior centerfielder Kayla Ogle is batting .423 and leads the team with 18 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. Overall, the Bucs are batting .341 with 11 players batting at least .300.
In the circle, sophomore Geneva Santos is 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 49.2 innings. Freshman Anieliese Palmeiro is 2-2 with one save, a 2.79 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. Overall the Bucs have a team ERA of 3.02 and are allowing 4.5 runs per game.
For the Mocs (8-12-1, 2-3 SSC), senior Jordan Alexander leads the offense with a .379 average, 16 runs scored and nine stolen bases. She is also the top power hitter with three doubles, a triple and two homers. Junior Erica Morriesey and freshman Jessica Trana bat .358 and .302 respectively. Morrisey has eight doubles and 10 RBI, while Trana has four doubles, a triple and a team-best 11 RBI.
In the circle, junior Brandi Jones is 4-4 with an 0.99 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 56.1 innings. Junior Hannah Loyer is 1-4 with a 3.05 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 41.1 innings and junior Sydney Koch is 3-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 38.2 innings.
The Mocs lead the all-time series 64-52, but since 2010, Barry has won 15 of 19 games, including 7-2 in Lakeland.
