Women's Tennis Wins SSC Opener

Barry tames Tech, 9-0

Box Score bMIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University won its Sunshine State Conference opener Saturday, beating Florida Tech, 9-0.

The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers improved to 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. No. 29 Florida Tech fell to 13-4, 2-1.

Barry's Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain, who form the No. 13-ranked doubles team in the country, defeated Merritt Rabson and Erin Egoroff, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles for the Bucs' first point. Judith Bohnenkamp and Barbora Kijasova defeated Tech's No. 3 doubles team of Kayla Hergott and Alahna Reto, 8-3, to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead. No. 22-ranked Zuza Maciejewska and Emma Onila fought off Chloe Chanley and Natasa Vukovic, 8-6, at the No. 3 pairs position to complete the doubles sweep.

Ranked eighth in the country, Maciejewska cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hergott at No. 1 singles. At the No. 4 position, 21st-ranked Pain got past Egoroff, 6-3, 6-0, to clinch the victory for the Bucs. Eleventh-ranked Larsen beat 48th-ranked Vukovic, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

Onila breezed to a 6-0 win over Chanley in the first set before holding off her Panthers opponent, 7-5, in the second set for a win at No. 2 singles. Bohnenkamp pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Lauren Stuckey at No. 6 singles to bump Barry's lead to 8-0.

At No. 5 singles, Kijasova dropped the opening set to Reto, 7-6 (7-4), before winning the second, 7-5, to square the match at a set apiece. Trailing 9-6 in the third-set super tiebreaker, Kijasova rallied to win the last five points to win, 11-9.

Barry's match against No. 4 Armstrong Tuesday has been postponed due to weather forecasts. Both teams are working on rescheduling the match.
