MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team hosts the Ave Maria Gyrenes in just their second home action of the season on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The Bucs (6-5, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) are coming off a three-game sweep of the Nova Southeastern Sharks last weekend to open conference play. Cheyanne Head was named the conference and national player of the week after hitting a blistering .900 (9-for-10) with five doubles, six runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases. Geneva Santos picked up two wins and Anieliese Palmeiro had a win and a save in the circle.
The Gyrenes (10-3) will be playing their first true road games of the season. They are 3-2 at home and 7-1 at neutral sites. They had their five-game winning streak snapped in their last outing, losing 7-6 to NCAA D-I Oakland on Wednesday.
The Bucs are led by Head, Kayla Ogle, Ashley Fernandez and Dee Espinosa at the plate. Head leads the SSC in batting at .621 (18-for-29) and in on-base percentage at .656. Ogle has been the engine in the Bucs' machine, batting .371 (13-for-35) with team highs in runs (12), walks (8) and stolen bases (8-of-9). Fernandez (11-for-33) and Espinosa (10-for-30) are both hitting .333. Fernandez, who has the Bucs' only homer so far, has seven runs and eight RBI, while Espinosa has six runs and nine RBI.
Santos and Palmeiro are 1-2 in the circle. Santos is 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 33.0 innings, while Palmeiro is 2-2 with a save and a 2.13 ERA in 23.0 innings.
Marinna Shadley leads the Gyrenes at the plate, batting .435 (20-for-46), with 14 runs scored, six doubles and a triple. She has also socked two of AMU's seven homers. Sadie Mosher is a two-way star, batting .366 (15-for-41) with 11 runs, 15 RBI and a team-best three homers. She is also 4-3 in the circle with a 3.00 ERA in 42.0 innings.
The games, the last non-conference homes games on the schedule, will be carried on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network, powered by Stretch Internet. Jose Paez will handle the call on the broadcast and there will also be a live stat feed.
