Softball Plays Five Games, Including Home Opener, This Weekend

Bucs travel to Sailfish Showdown and host Saints

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneer softball team has their work cut out for them this weekend, with five games in three days on tap.

The Bucs (2-1) travel to the Sailfish Showdown on Friday and Saturday, before returning to Miami Shores for their home opener on Sunday.

On Friday, Barry faces off against Washburn at 1:00 pm and Armstrong Atlantic (4-3) at 5:00 pm. For Washburn, it will be their first game of the season, after going 27-24 last year. The Pirates have won four out of seven so far on the season. The Bucs have never faced the Ichabods before, while Armstrong holds a 4-2 edge in the series after winning the last four in a row.

On Saturday, the Bucs face Georgia Southwestern (5-3). The Hurricanes are 5-3 heading into the weekend, and will face Florida Tech before facing the Bucs at the Showdown. Barry has won all three meetings with the 'Canes, including a pair of wins, 12-3 and 11-2, in St. Augustine, Fla., last year.

After eight neutral site games to start the season, the Bucs finally play at home on Valentine's Day, hosting the Flagler Saints (4-7). Flagler faces off against Rollins in a twinbill on Friday before traveling down to Miami Shores. The Saints, who reached the D-II Nationals in 2012, hold 7-6 edge in the all-time series, though the Bucs have won four of the last five including both games, 9-5 and 9-7, in St. Augustine last year.

Though they only played three of five games last weekend at the Eckerd Triton Invitational, the Bucs are the top offensive club in the Sunshine State Conference, batting .379 as a group. Cheyanne Head rapped out five hits in seven at-bats for a .714 average to lead the Bucs. Kayla Ogle is batting .583 and is tied with Head for the lead in stolen bases and with Ashley Fernandez in RBI. Fernandez is hitting .556 and leads the team with four runs scored.

Geneva Santos (2-0) has been the top pitcher, tossing two complete-game wins and holding the opposition to a .204 average.
