Buccaneers continue four-game homestand

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's men's basketball team will host Rollins 4 p.m. Friday at the Health & Sports Center in a Sunshine State Conference version of holiday hoops.

It is the second straight home game for the Bucs (8-1, 4-1 SSC). Barry will also host Xavier (La.) at 4 p.m. Saturday and Virgin Islands 7 p.m. Jan. 4 during a four-game homestand that began with a 27-point win over Indianapolis on Dec. 19. Friday's game against the Tars (7-5, 1-2) is the first since the Buccaneers put up 110 against Indy.

Catch all of the Holiday Hoops games on the Buccaneer Broadcast Network. Live Stream and Live Stats are available. Friday's game follows the women's game at 2 p.m.

Barry owns a 22-46 record against Rollins in the program's history. The Bucs and Xavier (La.) have never met. Barry beat Virgin Islands in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1997 in the only meeting between the two schools.

Rollins was receiving votes in the national poll earlier this season, but has lost four of its past six games, including back-to-back conference games to Florida Tech and surging Eckerd. The Tars are coming off a pair of losses to nationally-ranked West Texas A&M and Tarleton State in Las Vegas before Christmas. Like the Bucs, this is the Tars first game since Dec. 19. The Tars have three players scoring in double figures in Sam Philpott (17.3), Jeff Merton (15.3) and Joey Galvis (10.4). Rollins is being outrebounded by 6.2 boards per game.

That's an area the Bucs have struggled with, but bounced back in the board department against Indy when they outrebounded the Greyhounds by 10 on a night Barry shot 67.7 percent -- second all-time in school history. Kenan Guzonjic's work on the glass has triggered an improvement in the rebounding deficiencies. He had eight against Indianapolis and a season-high 11 at Florida Southern a week earlier.

An NAIA school, Xavier (3-8) lost, 50-47, at Paul Quinn in Dallas Thursday before making the trip to Miami Shores for Saturday's New Year's Eve matinee. Jalen David is the Gold Rush's only double figurer scorer at 13.1 points per game. Leland Alexander is averaging 7.5 points and 5.5 boards per game, while shooting 53 percent from the floor. Mike Williams is scoring 9.5 points, and Seth Jackson 9.1. The Gold Rush are being basically matched on the boards, pulling down 35.2 rebounds to their opponents' 33.7. Xavier has dropped its last three games and four of its past five. Before Thursday's loss in the Lone Star state, the Gold Rush also hadn't played since Dec. 19.

Virgin Islands is a member of Liga Athletica Universitaria, which is comprised of 16 schools sponsoring 16 official sports and four exhibition sports. Last year the Buccaneers finished the season on a six-game losing skid, which included three two-point games and two four-point verdicts.

TIP-INS: Adrian Gonzalez moved into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list after scoring a career-high 37 against Indianapolis ... He is 42 points away from moving into sixth place all time ... Arie Williams needs 10 more triples to move into third place all time ... He hit a season-high six 3s at Florida Tech earlier this year, but has not had more than three in any other game ... Barry ranks sixth in the nation in scoring (96.2), first in assists per game (24.1), second in field goal percentage (54.2), second in free throw percentage (81.8), third in assists-to-turnover-ratio (1.71) and ninth in three-point field goals per game (11.3) ... Elvar Fridriksson is third in the country in assists per game (8.2) ... Gonzalez is fifth in field goal percentage (69.3).
