Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- 2016 got off to a big start for Barry baseball, as it upset #2 Catawba on opening day, 12-7.
The Buccaneers scored in six consecutive innings, leading throughout the game. Five Bucs had RBI on the day with Khalil Denson leading the way with four hits and four RBI.
Denson and Alexander DeGoti got it started early for the Bucs, batting in three runs in the first two innings.
Catawba would get back into it in the top of the third with a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the inning, Armando Gonzalez would single to left field to bring Jonathan Quintana home and Denson would double into centerfield, bringing in three runs.
The Indians would get one back in the 4th to make 7-3, Barry.
Ramon Valdez would crush a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the bottom of the inning, bringing Gonzalez home with him.
Catawba would keep it competitive, scoring three runs in the 5th to make it 9-6.
In the bottoms of the 5th and 6th, the Bucs would separate themselves, making it as 12-6 game with a Ryan Baldwin 2-RBI double and an Alex DeGoti sac-fly that allow Valdez to score.
The Indians would add one more but could not muster anynmore runs as they fell to the upsetting Bucs
On the mound, Nate Greve earned the win with a three strikeout effort in 2.0 IP. Catawba's Sean Grant gained the loss, allowing seven runs off nine hits in 2.1 IP.
The Bucs improve to 1-0, while Catawba falls to 0-1. Up next for the Bucs is Tusculum tomorrow at 4 PM.
