Box Score Box ScoreSURPRISE, Ariz. -- Barry University women's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 win over New York Tech Wednesday in the NCAA Division II Championships Round of 16 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.
The No. 2 Buccaneers (22-1) advance to play Columbus State at 4 p.m. EST Thursday in the quarterfinals.
"On paper, it was a pretty easy match that we got, but we had to play well in doubles right from the beginning," Barry sophomore
Ana Pain said.
Pain and
Sonja Larsen, who are ranked third in the country, endured the toughest test in pairs play before pulling out an 8-5 win over 17th-ranked Sara Burinato and Alessia Rossetti at the No. 1 position.
"Sonja and I had a pretty tough match actually," Pain said. "It was pretty tight until the end. It was a match we had to take seriously in order to win, and win fast and rest for the next one."
Fourth-ranked
Emma Onila and
Linda Fritschken defeated Melanie Benyadi and Alex Borgenhoff, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.
Elisabeth Abanda and
Kimmy Twelker were 8-2 winners over Justyna Krol and Gabriela Siembab at No. 3 to send Barry into singles with a 3-0 lead.
"Bess and I tried to wrap it up really quick," Twelker said of her doubles match. "And I did the same in singles. So yeah, I had a good day."
Twelker rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Siembab at No. 6 singles to move the Buccaneers within a match of clinching. In a race to close, 29th-ranked
Linda Fritschken delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Krol at No. 4 singles to wrap it up.
Third-ranked
Emma Onila was within two games of winning her match with Benyadi at the No. 3 spot. Fourth-ranked Larsen was three games away from defeating 47th-ranked Burinato at No. 2. And 45th ranked Pain needed two more games to win her No. 5 singles match with Borgenhoff before Fritschken sealed the deal.
"It feels pretty good," Twelker said. "It's a different environment. The weather is different. It's hard to breathe. We're not really used to that. We only had two days to get used to everything. So it feels good to wrap up the first game pretty quick."
