Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The top-ranked Barry Buccaneers won a battle of number one teams and defending national champions as they defeated the NAIA's top team, the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Bucs (6-1) flashed their power in doubles, surrendering just four games in three matches. Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain stopped Valeria Podda and Laura Wehner 8-2 at number one. Division II's top pair, Linda Firstchken and Emma Onila defeated Victoria Svensson and Luma Schwab 8-1 at number two, while Kimmy Twelker and Elisabeth Abanda handled Chiara Di Salvo and Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff bby the same score at number three.
Singles was not much kinder to the Grizzlies (2-2), as the Bucs won rather quickly at the second, third and fourth flights. At number two, #23 Fritschken dominated Schwab 6-0, 6-2. Abanda handled Svensson 6-1, 6-1 at number three and #32 Pain took care of Wehner 6-1, 6-1 at number four.
NAIA fourth-ranked Podda exacted a measure of revenge on #7 Larsen, wining in a super tie-breaker after splitting sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.
At the fifth and sixth flights, the teams played pro sets, with the Grizzlies taking both. NAIA #33 Di Salvo defeated Jaci Witherspoon 8-5 while Pinones-Haltenhoff beat JayJay Lubin 8-2 at six.
The women take on NCAA Division I Butler on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 3:00 pm.
