Box Score Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team notched its second shutout in three days, beating Sunshine State Conference member Florida Southern, 9-0, Saturday morning.
The No. 2 Buccaneers (9-1, 3-0 SSC) were tested in only one set --
Sonja Larsen's No. 1 singles second set against FSC's Olivia Spagnuolo. But Larsen withstood the challenge, winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) as Barry picked up its fifth shutout this season. No. 45 Florida Southern fell to 2-9, 1-2 in the league.
Ana Pain and Larsen, who are ranked No. 3 in the South Region, beat seventh-ranked Magda Riutort and Spagnuolo, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.
Linda Fritschken and
Kimmy Twelker, paired together for a second straight match, beat Katie Taylor-Doran and Katie Stanford, 8-1, at the No. 2 flight.
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon shut out Cassie Eldredge and Shannon Griffin, 8-0, at No. 3. Abanda and Witherspoon are 6-1 this season.
Abanda moved to 8-0 in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Taylor-Doran at the No. 2 spot. It was Abanda's second straight win at the No. 2 flight. Fritschken, who is ranked No. 23 in the country, defeated Eldredge, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 for her 59th career singles win. She ranks seventh in school history in singles victories, 14 behind all-time leader Greta Trotman.
Twelker beat Stanford, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 for her second win this season. Witherspoon was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Griffin at No. 5 to improve to 6-2 this year.
JayJay Lubin picked up a win by default at No. 6.
Barry will play No. 13 New York Tech at 10 a.m. Sunday in Lakeland before beginning a five-match homestand Tuesday in Miami Shores over a two-week period.
