The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers handed St. Edward's their third straight loss in South Florida, beating the Hilltoppers, 9-0, Thursday at Buccaneer Tennis Center. Now the Bucs will head to Lakeland, Fla., for a pair of matches against Florida Southern and New York Tech.
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon put the Bucs on the board first, beating Rafaela Haegele and Marissa Williams, 8-2, at the No. 3 doubles spot. Barry's duo won the last six games.
Sonja Larsen and
Ana Pain battled fended off No. 24 Brooke Hughes and Sasha Khadzhyan, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead. Larsen and Pain pulled away from a 5-4 lead by winning the last three games.
Linda Fritschken and
Kimmy Twelker, playing together for the first time this season, beat Ivana Zecevic and Francesca Chaher, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles to complete the sweep in pairs. That was Fritschken's 80
th career doubles win, which leads Barry players all-time.
Pain, ranked No. 32 in the country in singles, breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chaher for the first point in singles at the No. 4 spot. She improved to 7-1 this season. Seventh-ranked Larsen secured the win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Khadzhyan at No. 1. Larsen also moved to 7-1 on the season.
"I just played my game from the beginning until the end," Pain said. "I was just doing the right things at the right moment. I was moving well. I was just feeling well."
Fritschken won the third singles match for the Bucs, beating Zecevic, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. She, too, is now 7-1 this season. At No. 2 singles, Abanda cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Haegele. It was her second win at the No. 2 flight this season.
Twelker beat Summer Biggs, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 for her first singles win of the season after nursing injuries to start the year. Witherspoon polished off the sweep with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory over Vanessa Camara at No. 6.
Saturday and Sunday will mark the first back-to-back matches since the end of February.
"I think the team, even if we have Emma (Onila) injured now, everybody is supporting everybody," Pain said. "We're just going to do what we have to do to win both of them."
