Buccaneers run away from Sailfish in second half

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Barry University's men's basketball team bounced back in a big way Saturday, stepping outside the conference to thump host Palm Beach Atlantic, 99-75.

The Buccaneers (18-2) turned a 39-39 halftime tie into a rout. Yunio Barrueta, who spent the morning hours shooting inside the Health & Sports Center, scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. It was his eighth double-double of the season. Barrueta had 15 points on six of seven shooting in the first half as the Sailfish battled the Bucs to a stalemate. Barrueta hit a career-best six triples, knocking down three in each half.

Juan Ferrales, who scored nine of his 12 points in the second half, buried one of his three triples to give the Buccaneers a 57-44 lead with 15:09 to play. Barrueta canned a 3 and was fouled 1:09 later, sinking the free throw to complete a four-point play and give Barry a 63-46 lead.

Barry extended its lead to 22 on Adrian Gonzalez's jumper at the 9:41 mark. Jevoni Robinson split a pair from the free throw line with 7:38 on the clock to make it 82-58, and Arie Williams buried the Bucs final field goal – a triple with 2:08 to go – to push the lead to 27.

Williams had 11 points, reaching double figures for the fourth time this season. He was four of six from the floor, including three of five from beyond the arc. Deric Hill had eight points, eight assists, five rebounds and a career-high seven steals. Savad Garner scored 10 points, reaching double figures for the third time in the last four games. 

Barry, which had an 11-game win streak snapped Wednesday in a loss to No. 2 Florida Southern, scored 24 points off 18 PBA turnovers. The Bucs, who committed 15 turnovers, averaged 1.25 points per possession, going 36 of 65 from the field for 55.4 percent. The Buccaneers shot 65.6 percent in the second half.

PBA, which led by nine with 5:20 to play in the first half, hit eight triples before the break. The Sailfish were paced by Clayton Williams' 16 points on five of nine shooting, was 27 of 59 from the field for 45.8 percent. Evin Graham had 12 points and five assists, and Nigel Sydnor scored 10 points and had seven assists.

The Bucs, who were outrebounded by the Sailfish in the first meeting, won the battle on the glass in this one, 34-25. Barry went 14 of 26 from long range for 54 percent. PBA hit 13 of 31 from 3-point range for 42 percent.

Barry's bench outscored Palm Beach Atlantic, 33-21, in a game the Buccaneers dished out 25 assists.
