Box Score Box ScoreVALDOSTA, Ga. -- Barry University's women's tennis team hasn't won like this before. Not anytime recently, anyway. Nevertheless, the No. 2-ranked Buccaneers picked up another win to move on.
Barry beat No. 11 Valdosta State, 5-0, Friday. Two of the Bucs' wins came by default.
No. 1-ranked
Emma Onila and
Linda Fritschken beat Anke Poncelet and Jennifer Rink, 8-3, at the top doubles flight.
Ana Pain and
Sonja Larsen, who've formed a steady tandem together in the early part of the season, were 8-1 winners over Bea Morales and Joanna Lario at No. 2 doubles.
Fritschken's doubles win broke a school record. She has 77 wins as a pairs player, which broke Greta Trotman and Bojana Miladinovic's shared record of 76.
VSU (4-3) did not field a doubles team at the third flight, allowing Barry's
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon to win by default.
Four of the singles matches went unfinished, and
Kimmy Twelker picked up her first win of the season by default when the Blazers didn't have a No. 6 flight entry. That meant the Bucs only needed Pain's 6-1, 6-0 walkover of Poncelet to decide the team result.
In the other Bucs singles matches, only Witherspoon won a set.
Barry will play No. 7 West Florida Saturday at 10 a.m.
