Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team is without a couple players. Sunday it came up short to its national rival.
No. 1 Barry lost to No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic, 5-4, at Rollins College. It was the first loss of the season for the Buccaneers (4-1), while Armstrong (7-0) was tested for the first time this year. The Pirates had won five of their six matches prior to Sunday by 9-0 sweeps. Their other win was an 8-1 decision.
Barry trailed 2-1 after doubles as the Pirates pair of Lena Lutzeier and Clara Perez defeated No. 1
Linda Fritschken and
Emma Onila, 8-4, at the top flight. At No. 3, AASU's Alejandra Cisneros and Diana Stomlega beat
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon, 8-6. Barry's
Sonja Larsen and
Ana Pain defeated Nicole Huergo and Carolina Prats-Milan, 8-6.
Fifth-ranked Onila came up with a big win over third-ranked Perez, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 singles. It was Onila's signature win. Lutzeier, the No. 29-ranked singles player in the country, beat 23rd-ranked Fritschken, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), at the second flight. Larsen, ranked No. 7, was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over 11th-ranked Prats-Milan, 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 4, Cisneros upset 32nd-ranked Pain, 6-3, 6-0. Abanda pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Huergo at No. 5 singles. Stomlega beat Witherspoon, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6.
Barry will play three matches at Valdosta State next weekend.
