Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Barry University women's tennis team took its NCAA Division II No. 1 ranking on the road Friday, beating NAIA No. 2 Embry-Riddle, 9-0.
The Buccaneers (2-0) wasted little time deciding the outcome after sweeping doubles play and rolling to five singles victories in straight sets over the 2-1 Eagles, who are set to become future members of the Sunshine State Conference after a probationary period.
Barry's No. 1-ranked
Emma Onila and
Linda Fritschken defeated No. 3 Hui-I Huang and Anna Gotz, 8-2, at the top doubles flight.
Sonja Larsen and
Ana Pain beat Embry-Riddle's Paula Ortiz Couder and Kathryn Bock, 8-2, at No. 2 pairs.
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon were 8-3 winners over Giovanna Tomiotto and Ana Gonzalez Hoy at No. 3 doubles.
Onila, ranked No. 5 in Division II singles, beat 13
th-ranked Huang, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1. Larsen, the No. 7-ranked singles player in Division II was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Gotz, the No. 29-ranked player in NAIA. Fritschken, who is ranked No. 23 in Division II, beat Couder, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3.
At No. 4, 32
nd-ranked Pain raced past Tomiotto, 6-1, 6-0. Abanda had an easy go of it with Hoy, winning 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. At No. 6, Witherspoon won the first set, 6-0, before pulling out a second set tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6).
The Bucs will play at Florida Tech 12 p.m. Saturday in the SSC opener.
