MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers embark for another weekend softball tournament on Saturday and Sunday, as they travel to the South/Southeast Region Crossover at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.
The Bucs will face the host Saints in a twinbill on Saturday and the Georgia Southwestern State Hurricanes on Sunday. The games against Flagler will be the Bucs' first true road games of the season.
The Bucs enter the tournament with a 4-3 record, winning three of their last four games. Megan Copeland continues to pace the offense. The junior centerfielder has hit safely in all seven games this season, including four multi-hit games. She is batting .542 with nine runs scored and nine stolen bases in nine attempts. She has also drawn four walks, for a .607 on-base percentage, against no strikeouts. Ashley Fernandez, Dee Espinosa and Kelly Martinez each have four RBI to pace the team. Cheyanne Head (.444) and Lexi Corrente (.417) are also hitting above .400 in the early times.
Haley Wiseman has shouldered the bulk of the pitching duties so far, tossing 26.0 of the Bucs' 48 innings on the season. She is 3-1 with a save in five appearances with a 3.50 ERA and 29 strikeouts.
As a team, the Bucs are batting .305 and averaging 4.4 runs per game. They have a 3.94 team ERA and 48 strikeouts in 48 innings.
The Saints, who face off with Florida Southern on Friday night to start the tournament, enter with a 3-4 record, all at home. They are batting .238 as a team and have a 3.79 team ERA, racking up 29 strikeouts in 48 innings. Kayla Fuller leads the Saints with a .350 average, three home runs and 10 RBI. Kelli Parker, who is batting .400, leads the team with four stolen bases. Katelynn Smith leads the pitching staff with 20 innings. She has a 3.15 ERA and 16 strikeouts to go with a 1-2 record.
The Hurricanes, who face Florida Southern on Saturday before playing the Bucs, are 3-1 coming in. They are batting a healthy .312 and have pounded eight homers to average seven runs per game. Lauren Thrasher is 8-for-12 (.667) with a pair of homers and seven RBI. Keri Thompkins is 4-for-8 and all four hits have left the yard. She also has driven in seven runs.
