Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's No. 1-ranked women's tennis team opened the season with a 9-0 sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic Tuesday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers won all of the singles matches in straight sets after overcoming minor resistance in the three doubles matches. The loss was the first of the season for the Sailfish, which had won its first three matches -- all against Sunshine State Conference opponents. But the Bucs, the reigning NCAA Division II and SSC champs, proved to be too much for PBA.
Barry's No. 2 doubles team of
Sonja Larsen and
Ana Pain were the first to finish in pairs play, beating Maja Jovic and Ana Reich, 8-0.
Elisabeth Abanda and
Jasi Witherspoon gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead when they beat PBA's Leyla Taracena and Michaela Mignemi, 8-4, at No. 3. Barry's
Emma Onila and
Linda Fritschken, the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country, were 8-4 winners over Veena Vasquez and Valerie Nagovitcina at the top flight.
In singles play, Larsen beat Vasquez, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot for her first dual match victory of her collegiate career. Onila defeated Nagovitcina, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Fritschken was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Jovic at No. 3. Abanda beat Taracena, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4. Pain blanked Reich, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Witherspoon won her first collegiate duals match, beating Mignemi, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6.
Barry will play at future SSC member Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida, Friday at 3 p.m. to begin a three-match road weekend.
