TAMPA, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry University women's tennis team (8-6, 4-4 SSC) has advanced to the semi-final round of the Sunshine State Conference Championship tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Bucs upset the fourth-ranked Rollins College, 5-2 in the first round of the championship.
The Bucs won the doubles matches in the number one and two positions with the power-stacked duo of
Ildiko Csordas and Berit Peterson's 8-5 win over Marnie Mahler and Tasi Purcell, while freshmen Laime Contreras and Saskia Kruse defeated Sonia Bernal and Mai-Han Nguyen, 8-5. Bucs
Svetlana Konyashkina and Helen Wisniewski lost a tie breaker to Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji, 9-8, 7-5.
Victories for the Bucs in the number one, four and six spots in singles was enough to end the match for the day. At number one, Csordas defeated Purcell, 6-2, 6-2. Barry's Kruse won her match against Shevchenko at number four, 6-2, 6-2, while freshmen Konyashkina shut out the Tars' Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0. Wisniewski stepped in at the number two position and was defeated by Mahler, 6-1, 6-2. Freshmen Peterson and Contreras' matches were unfinished at number three and five respectively.
The #1 Lynn University Fighting Knights defeated the #8 Eckerd College Tritons 5-0 in the first round today. The Bucs will face the Knights on Fri., Apr. 20 at 2:30 p.m. for the semi-final round.
