Women's Tennis Gets Burned

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 16th ranked Barry University women’s tennis team fell to the #4 ranked Valdosta State Blazers, 8-1 at the White Sands Invitational on Friday afternoon.
 
The dynamic duo of Berit Peterson and Ildiko Csordas prevented the Bucs from being shut out in their first round of the tournament with a well-deserved win against Dominique Rotherlaender and Anne Corten, 9-7. At number two, freshman Sveletlana Konashkina and junior Helen Wisniewski were put away by Blazers Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon, 8-0.  Bucs’ Laime Contreras andMuriel Sherwood managed to grab three points in their loss to Sonya Haggstrom and Natali Gumbrecht, 8-3. 
 
The Bucs hustled on the courts to win points but failed to win not one set. Junior Csordas led Barry at number one against Durante, 6-2, 6-2 with teammate Wisniewski jumping into the number to spot against Rothlaender, 6-3, 6-1.  The middle of the pack featured the freshmen with Peterson against Corten, 6-1, 6-3 and Konyashkina falling to Gumbrecht. The Blazers’ Haggstrom defeated Contreras 6-2, 6-3 while the Bucs’ Sherwood fell to Redon 6-1, 6-0.
 
The Bucs will face #1 BYU-Hawaii in the second round of the tournament on Saturday, Mar. 31 at 11:30 a.m. and #5West Florida on Sunday, Apr. 1 at 9:00 a.m.
