MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University women's tennis team (3-2, 1-1 SSC) was served a bit of luck with a 5-4 victory over the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights on Wednesday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Knights got a jump start over the Bucs in doubles matches, as the power-stacked combo of
Ildiko Csordas and Berit Peterson were the only duo from Barry to win their match against Katherin Arlak and Christine Tran, 8-6. Helen Wisniewski and Laime Contreras were defeated by the Rutgers' Katrina Elder Bush and Caitlin Baker, 8-5 and Saski Kruse and Julie Cadet fell to Lauren Edelschein and Anela Duisic, 8-4.
In singles action, the Bucs held up against Rutgers in the first and second positions. In position number one, Csordas was challenged by Elder-Bush, but came out on top, 6-3, 7-6, winning the tie breaker, 7-5. Junior Wisniewski also pulled through for the Bucs with a 6-4, 6-4 win over one of the Scarlet Knight's stronger players, Arlak. The break came to the Bucs when Contreras was down 2-3 in the first set at the number four position. Her opponent, Polina Zarester, was plagued with a back injury and Contreras won by default.
The Bucs will spend the weekend on the road starting with a match against Eckerd on Saturday, Mar. 17 in St. Petersburg, Fla. at 10:00 am.
