MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The sixth-ranked Barry University women’s tennis team dropped its second straight match, falling 7-2 to the #4 Lynn Knights at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The Knights swept through the doubles. Leigh Shelton and Katerina Jiskerova defeated Helen Wisniewski and Berit Peterson 8-3 at number one and the sixth-ranked combo of Vici Weltz and Alex Schunk topped Ildiko Csordas and Svetalana Konyashkina by the same score. At the third flight, Katie Dombrowski and Gedvill Norkute were perfect 8-0 over Saskia Kruse and Laime Contreras.
The singles match were mostly more competitive. Lynn’s Jiskerova snapped Kruse’s win streak with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at number four, but four of the other five singles went three sets.
Csordas, ranked 20 in the last ITA poll, upset #6 Weltz 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (3) at number one. Contreras rallied from a first set loss to beat Dombrowski 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 at number six.
Fifth-ranked Schunk, playing at number two, defeated Wisniewski 6-3, 6-4, while Norkute, ranked 30th, beat Peterson 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at number three. Shelton and Konyashkina split the first two sets before Shelton came away with the super tie-breaker 7-6 (5), 6-1, 13-11 at number five.
The Bucs travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday, Mar. 3 to take on the NAIA #11-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles.
